King’s College Hospital opens the UK’s
first rooop garden critical care unit
King’s College Hospital has become the
first hospital in the UK to open a fully
medically-equipped, critical care garden,
located on the roof of King’s 60-bed
critical care unit.
It means that patients can enjoy the
benefits of being outdoors in the natural
light, fresh air and amongst greenery
without being disconnected from
essential life-support systems.
You may have seen this featured on local
and national UK news outlets and even
internationally, earlier this year.
You might remember Maria, who shared
her experience of receiving care on the
Critical Care Unit in our winter appeal;
she recently came to visit the now
complete garden and was delighted to
see the finished project.
The new King’s Critical Care Roof Garden
has space for up to six beds, enabling
each patient to be close to a specially
designed weatherproof, medical cabinet
which houses power, data and medical
gases, such as oxygen.
