Family rooms
When a child is critically ill in hospital, parents want
nothing more than to be close by.
The Dobson family sadly lost their baby girl, Evelyn Rose,
who lived for just 11 precious days in King’s Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).
During their stay, Evelyn’s parents, Jonathan and Alexandra, noticed that the family
rooms had become run-down. They decided to raise money for King’s College Hospital
Charity, in order to refurbish the rooms in Evelyn’s memory.
Thanks to the incredible efforts of the Dobson family and friends, more than £50,000
was raised and a further £30,000 donated by the Grace Trust, enabling the family rooms
to be completely transformed. Each Family Room now has:
Completely new bathrooms and bespoke kitchenettes to maximise the space
Full redecoration and brand-new furnishings
Soothing lighting and finishing touches to create a calm environment
Sleeper chairs
Not being able to sleep by your child’s bedside when they
are in hospital is a stressful experience for any parent.
Evie Dove’s family know this only too well. Evie tragically
lost her life to a brain tumour at just 13 years old.
Determined to give back and to support other families with
critically ill children, the Dove family and friends raised an
incredible £55,000.
Their fundraising has made a real difference to families through a full refurbishment
of the family room on the ward, but also the purchase of 19 sleeper chairs which allow
parents and guardians to stay at their child’s bed side throughout the night.
With more than 850 children treated on the wards each year, over 1,500 parents, carers
and relatives spend time there annually.
